Frank Lloyd Wright’s Dudley Spencer House

Wilmington, Delaware

Principal Dan Nichols of Ragan Design Group has provided “on-call” consulting services to the current owner of the Dudley Spencer House in Wilmington, Delaware designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956.

The Spencer house was constructed by its original owner acting as his own general contractor, with little or no direct oversight by Wright’s office. Though the house was sited as Wright specified and constructed largely as per the original drawings, some interior details and finish material specifications were altered at the time of the original construction, and significant, non-Wright designed embellishments were gradually added. Dan has provided research and design guidance for the current owner in their efforts to bring the house’s exterior and interiors in line with Wright’s original intent as noted in the original drawings. Other work has included guidance for maintenance and repair efforts: specifications for roofing replacement and adaptation of existing details to receive new materials; oversight and guidance for repairs to isolated water damaged roof framing; coordination and design guidance for modifications to the kitchen cabinetry for the replacement of appliances, and needed alterations to address current usage patterns.
