The owners of a large 19th century Gothic Revival house needed a kitchen better suited to modern living. The original kitchen was largely intact, but its design was based on servants performing the kitchen duties, and the provision for modern appliances and the logical adjacencies that we have come to expect for them, were lacking. Our solution was to minimize change to original kitchen and utilize an adjacent servant’s quarters as the food preparation kitchen, while repurposing the original kitchen as a space for family meals and casual entertaining.

Antique cabinetry and a mix of modern and reconditioned antique fixtures were utilized. Some custom cabinetry was made to match existing millwork in the room. As the house is brownstone, existing exterior openings were respected and incorporated into the design to the best advantage.
